01 / CUSTOM 3D ALUMINUM CLADDING

Double Curved Aluminum Panels for Freeform Facades

A double-curved aluminum panel is a solid aluminum alloy cladding panel with curvature in two principal directions. Dome-like, saddle-shaped and other freeform surfaces allow architectural designs that require more than a simple cylindrical arc.

ALUPANELIX reviews 3D surface models, panel segmentation and forming requirements to translate complex designs into factory-fabricated metal cladding. The production route is selected for the alloy, temper, thickness and surface geometry, with custom tooling, trial forming, joining and finishing where required.

Rear stiffeners, mounting points and subframes are coordinated for self-weight, wind loading and thermal movement. Geometry and surface quality are checked against approved drawings and samples before production acceptance.

Reference options for custom double-curvature fabrication
Material3003 / 5005 / 5052 aluminum alloy; temper, formability, welding and finish compatibility to project review.
Thickness options2.0 / 2.5 / 3.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 mm; selected according to curvature, span, forming process and structural requirements.
Panel size referenceUp to 1500 × 4000 mm, subject to 3D geometry, developed blank dimensions, tooling, coating and transport capacity. Larger surfaces can be divided into coordinated segments; joint layout requires approval.
Model & fabrication3D modelling and surface analysis → panel division and blank/tooling review → CNC-controlled forming, multi-pass forming or mould pressing as appropriate → joining, reinforcement and finishing. A simple rolling route is not suitable for every doubly curved surface.
ReinforcementRear aluminum stiffeners and connections designed for panel geometry, wind loads, self-weight and thermal movement. Spacing and attachment details follow the approved structural design.
Panel weightCalculated for the selected alloy, thickness, developed panel area, folded returns, stiffeners and fittings. Confirm the assembly weight in the approved panel schedule.
Surface treatmentsPVDF coating, polyester (PE) coating, powder coating, wood-grain or stone-effect finishes; anodizing subject to alloy, forming and sample review.
Color matchingRAL / PANTONE references or customer-supplied samples. Final color, gloss, texture and pattern alignment to physical sample approval.
Installation optionsThree-dimensionally adjustable hanging connections, angle-bracket dry fixing or close-joint systems, as detailed by the project designer.
Performance & inspectionCurvature, reference points, panel boundaries, joints, welds, reinforcement, fixing positions and finish to agreed criteria. Fire classification and other performance claims require applicable product or assembly documentation.

Manufacturer-supplied reference options. Maximum size and thickness ranges do not establish feasibility for every shape. Final material, forming route, geometry, tolerances and performance follow approved models, drawings, samples and quotation.

Surface Treatments for Double Curved Panels

Approve the finish on a representative formed sample.

Finish options, appearance and application considerations
TreatmentSelection guidance
PVDF coatingFor exterior double-curved cladding, including coastal projects with a suitable system. A three-coat/two-bake process can be reviewed where specified. UV, acid-rain and color-retention performance depend on the selected system, pretreatment, exposure and supporting supplier documentation.
Polyester (PE) coatingA decorative option with varied colors for interior sculptural panels. Confirm formulation, exposure suitability and written performance terms; no universal service life is assumed.
Powder coatingFor interior curved ceilings and other applications with an appropriate powder grade. Coordinate forming and coating sequence and inspect representative samples; flexibility and crack resistance require system-specific confirmation.
Wood-grain transferWood-look decorative effects for hotels and cultural projects. Review transfer feasibility, grain direction and pattern continuity on a representative double-curved sample; fire and moisture requirements apply to the complete product or assembly.
Stone-effect finishA stone-inspired appearance on lightweight curved metal cladding for shaped columns and facades. Approve texture, pattern placement, joints and exposure suitability.
AnodizingMetallic appearance options, including silver and bronze references, for interior art features. Alloy, temper, welds and forming affect consistency; confirm process, finish and sealing with a sample.

Select the coating system for the actual exposure and approve a representative formed sample. Confirm performance requirements, maintenance and any warranty against the applicable supplier documentation and written quotation.

Related finishes: PVDF-coated aluminum panels, wood-grain panels and anodized panels.

PROJECT QUESTIONS

Double Curved Aluminum Panel FAQs

Request a 3D model review ↗
What is a double-curved aluminum panel?

It is a formed solid aluminum panel with curvature in two principal directions, such as a dome or saddle surface. It is also described as double-curvature aluminum cladding or a 3D curved facade panel.

How does it differ from a single curved panel?

A single-curved panel bends in one principal direction, such as a cylindrical segment. Double-curved surfaces require a 3D geometry review and may need more complex tooling, forming and inspection.

Can every 1500 × 4000 mm surface be made as one panel?

No. This is a panel-size reference, not a guarantee for every alloy, thickness or curvature. Developed blank size, forming strain, tooling, finishing and transport determine feasibility. Larger or more complex surfaces may need approved segmentation.

Which files are needed for custom fabrication?

Provide a 3D surface model, dimensioned sections, panel divisions, reference points, joint details, thickness, alloy, quantities and finish brief. Confirm the accepted model format with the team before sending the production package.

Does the panel have an A2 fire classification?

A2 or any other classification must be supported by the applicable test standard and report for the supplied product or assembly. The aluminum substrate alone does not establish the classification of a coated facade or ceiling system.

How are tooling cost and lead time determined?

Surface complexity, alloy temper, panel count, moulds, trial forming, welds, reinforcement, finishing and inspection determine the quotation and programme. Approval of samples and geometry is coordinated before production.

How do I choose an exterior finish?

Review the coating system against UV, coastal exposure, color and maintenance requirements. PVDF and other finishes require sample approval and supporting performance documentation. Any long-term color-retention target or warranty must be confirmed in writing.
